5. Do It Yourself (DIY) IoT Systems

Example IoT Cases

Learning Objectives

  • Watch videos outlining the process of developing real-world applications
  • Receive an introduction into grant possibilities within the IoT and LoRaWAN community
  • Learn about IoT Off-Grid’s Breakneck Ridge Initiative
Read More on the Breakneck Ridge Initiative here: https://github.com/iotoffgrid/Breakneck-Ridge-Initiative

A DIY example that encompasses everything from the hardware deployment to software development side is IoT Off-Grid’s very own Open-Trak platform for LoRaWAN GPS tracking with Helium. This is a project that was initially developed to provide a GPS solution for novice hikers in dangerous trails such as Breakneck Ridge in Hudson Highland State Park in New York. After receiving feedback from the Helium community regarding a lack of an open platform for LoraWAN GPS tracking, this project was modified to deliver a free-to-use open-source tracking platform.

Outlining the advantages and metrics of success in IoT implementation proposals is crucial for securing support and investment. What separates your project? Why is IoT the correct platform for your project? Measuring the success of the project, evaluating potential uses, and ensuring accountability are all areas that need to be considered. By doing so, potential consumers can effectively evaluate the benefits and costs of IoT implementation, and make informed decisions about the project’s feasibility and potential impact.

A concise timeline is critical in any project management as it helps to ensure project completion, resource allocation, progress monitoring, stakeholder management, and budget management. By establishing a clear timeline from the very start, you can keep the project on track and ensure that it meets its objectives.

Pilot testing is critical for a new IoT project as it is necessary to validate the overall concept, test the technology, evaluate and alter the user experience, as well as manage and eliminate risks. By conducting a pilot test, you are able to identify and address any issues or challenges before scaling the project, which should ultimately lead to a more successful implementation.

As with any solution, observance after full deployment is essential to ensure its ongoing success and effectiveness. Continuous monitoring provides valuable insights into the following: long-term performance, optimization, security, and company or regulatory compliance.
